What is Concrete? Concrete Answers on the Difference Between Cement & Concrete

by | Mar 17, 2025 | Concrete

You may wonder what the difference between concrete and cement is. They may be the same thing since many people use their names interchangeably. In this blog, we’re here to break that misconception! Read on as we explain the difference with concrete facts. Understanding the difference can make you more knowledgeable and confident for your next landscaping or hardscaping project.

What is Cement?

What is Cement Used For?

Cement is a binding agent used in construction to set, harden, and adhere materials together. It is mostly used for structures like road construction and masonry. It is a key ingredient for concrete. Besides helping create structures like buildings, bridges, dams, roads, and mortars, it can patch and fill cracks in damaged concrete. It can even help modify soil and reduce its susceptibility to moisture. Ultimately, it is a product that is affordable to use, strong, and durable.

What is Cement Composed of?

The cement mixture is usually made with eight key ingredients. By interacting, these ingredients can form more complex compounds responsible for cement’s properties. The main ingredients are (from highest to lowest percentage of composition): lime, silica, alumina, iron oxide, magnesia, sulfur trioxide, calcium sulfate, and alkalis. Mixing these ingredients allows the cement mixture to form more complex compounds like tricalcium silicate and aluminoferrite. Manufacturers take great care when mixing these ingredients. They can also create certain mixtures by increasing or decreasing the ingredient percentages.

What is Concrete?

What is Concrete Used for?

Concrete is used for generally the same projects as cement, such as large-scale construction, roads and pavements, mortar, and bridges. However, concrete is more versatile than cement and is widely used in large-scale construction projects like building foundations, beams, columns, and slabs. They can also be used in smaller jobs like grouting. The key difference is that concrete is stronger and more durable than cement, so it can be used for larger, more substantial projects. Cement alone is rarely used because it is frequently mixed with other materials to create concrete.

What is Concrete Made of?

Concrete is composed of a much smaller number of ingredients than cement. It comprises three main ingredients: cement, water, and aggregates like sand and/or gravel. It can have additional elements like entrained air and other additional, but optional, additives to help its curing time and strength. A cement mixture helps bind it when water is applied, and the aggregates help provide filler material. This mixture can then be used to create concrete blocks, sidewalks, and other structures for large or small construction projects.

How Can Concrete and Cement Be Used for Your Landscaping Project?

Best Ways to Use Concrete for Your Landscaping Project

Concrete is an excellent choice for your next landscaping project; its durability makes it a great option to enhance your yard. You can build concrete planters for your garden that are suitable for flowers, succulents, and small trees. You can also create a concrete patio to put your furniture on. Concrete is also useful for installing seating areas for a fire pit or used dually as a retaining wall. Lastly, you can use them to provide curbing or stepping stones to help drive foot traffic.

Best Ways to Use Cement for Your Landscaping Project

Cement is used for all the concrete structures I listed above, but cement mixture can be used without being mixed with concrete, although the options are limited. You can use cement mortar for stone and brickwork. The cement will help bind the stones and bricks together to help keep garden walls, brick walls, or pathways together. You can also use it as a render if mixed with fine sand. This will help cover and protect exterior walls or garden features. This can work for grout as well. Lastly, you can use cement paint or cement stucco to create a durable, weather-resistant wall covering. Cement stucco can apply a textured finish to your outside walls, while cement paint can be mixed with water and pigment to color your walls with a more durable, weather-resistant paint.

Conclusion

mixture rather than the terms being used interchangeably, you can feel more confident and knowledgeable about how best to utilize them for your next landscaping project. However, landscaping can be a lot of work, and you don’t want to make any mistakes when you install your concrete or cement. Improper installation will result in poor quality, leading to cracks and other structural problems.
